Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford began to be fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
